What kind of Utopia is yet to be expected at the present time? It seems that the so called “end of the history”, as some philosophers call the end of the Wall and the last bloody decade of ethnic wars in XX century, rang the ultimate bell of all “ideal” social structures, imagined and designed in the previous centuries, obductioned their clinical death of emanation and functional wholeness.

Utopia of Thomas More or New Atlantis of Bacon seem to be forever lost, and regained their homeland of fairy-tales. The “Ideal societies” of the last century, instead of promised Jerusalem on Earth, brought devastating world wars, oppression, genocide and desolation to the nations that experienced the try-out.

The today’s inheritance of the vanished utopian concepts, praise global equalisation, military and economical domination, and media network surveillance. This “post-utopian” reality is a sort of mild tyranny, a velvet totalitarian hold over the liberties of the manhood.

The Good News project deals with this overwhelming phenomenon of NEWS, its potential to dominate the attention and the will by the diffusion of insecurity and fear via bad news, catastrophes and tragedies either massive or personal.

The general idea is to create a structure that will emit only the good news, by transfiguring the incoming “bad ones” from the official media, globally. This “filtration is meant to gain the “ideal” situation of the state of the world. The process can be considered as the double-edged, that one hand there is the basic (fundamental) longing for the “best of the worlds”, and on the other it hides a part, or sometimes a whole reality, which in fact leads to a first trap of totalitarian lie, and by this to a whole chain of restrictions of freedoms, that finally it ends in a cul de sac  of its own projections; in a sort a project is a metamorphosis in flesh of an utopian idea toward totalitarianism, although the whole process can be inverted in any moment. The source for the “filter” will be the daily global news that will be simply collected by an operator and transfigured by using the manual I’ll provide. The news can be most easily collected over the Internet.

The Good News project took place on the corner of Stadt gasse, Karlauer strasse and Schweitzer strasse, in between a Jackpoint video games house and Police HQ’s, at the very gates of Gries Platz in Graz, Austria. It’s position strategically dominated the only street that enters the Platz, and though it was almost inevitably observable by the passengers, on the street and in the vehicles; The Good News was a temporary building made basically out of wood and plywood, consisting of the façade and the tower – the whole has an intentional mixture of architectural forms of Russian structuralism and American industrial buildings (first half of XX century period), to underline the structural source of utopian architecture.

METHODS OF GOOD NEWS DIffuson:

“Running Tape”  All along the façade was a "running tape" that distributed the news every 20-30sec. This device was fed once a day by a diskette prepared the same day.

The Speakers Four old-fashioned public speakers distributed audio-recorded news in the air on every full hour. This device was fed via a short wave radio connection from a looped CD-ROM recording and was updated once every two days.

The Billboard  News on billboards would change once a week.

The Flag  The news on the flag was changed once in a month.
This was important, because it was necessary to create a use for the rhythm of the news. In the same structure was imagined a small kiosk box where occasionally the Good news-paper could be sold.
