evolutionÄre zellen – self-initiated design of social perspectives
Finger (Martin Brandt, Florian Haas, Claudia Humme, Andreas Wolf)
http://www.evolutionaere-zellen.org/

Dear Readers,

All of the projects briefly introduced in the finger issue No.11 have in common that they were submitted by their initiators to the competition evolutionäre zellen – self-initiated design of social perspectives –, which was conceived of and organized by finger (Martin Brandt, Florian Haas, Claudia Hummel, Andreas Wolf) as a work group of the Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst, e.V. in Berlin.

Seven of these projects have been designated by the jury of the competition as recipients of prize money awards. In order to further illustrate the wide spectrum of the projects submitted, and to be able to present more examples of the diversity of forms in which a commitment to shaping social perspectives can be identified today, we have chosen an additional seven projects from the total pool of the entries to the competition to be presented in this issue.

We were looking for situations in which concepts for designing social perspectives concurred in their form, practice and communication of an idea, creating a new point of reference or marker in the structure and discourse of society which could facilitate orientation. Put in a common context, these concepts open up the field of self-initiated designing of society and widen the scope of its current perspectives.

In our search for an institution which would support this kind of design concept, we approached the Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst e.V. in Berlin. Since its foundation in 1969, the NGBK has repeatedly adressed the relationship between art and sociopolitical reality. The NGBK's agenda has traditionally been – and continues to be – determined by its members. Individual program suggestions are presented at the members‘ assembly, which then votes on which projects should be realized. Our project received a positive majority, enabling us to realize the competition »evolutionäre zellen – self-initiated designing of social perspectives«.

The competition was publicly announced at the beginning of 2002. We directed our call for entries at all persons, whether amateur or professional, who are actively committed to contributing to the shape of their social environment. We were looking for autodidactic methods and »professional dilettantes« who are taking an individual and creative approach to developing new or alternative social structures in order to express their needs and convey their reflections, and so to further encourage innovative and critical thinking. Regardless of the realisation potential of the individual ideas, the goal of the competition was to provide a forum for the development of evolutionäre zellen on the borderline between social acceptance and rejection, and so to contribute to the representation and mediation of such »evolutionäre zellen« as a relevant factor in cultural production and processes.

The competition and the jury, the members of which were chosen on the basis of their experience as initiators of evolutionäre zellen, were first introduced in an exhibition at the NGBK in early 2002. The exhibition was complemented by a lecture series, in the context of which the individual members of the jury presented their approaches, opening the field of »evolutionäre zellen« for discussion.

The members of the jury were:
• Dieter Klemmstein (Director of the Museum of the Prison in Celle) • Ute Meta Bauer (Institut für Theorie, Praxis und Vermittlung von Gegenwartskunst, Vienna) represented by Women on Waves and Yvonne P. Doderer • Pater Gregor Böckermann (Ordensleute für den Frieden, Frankfurt am Main) • Die Glücklichen Arbeitslosen (Berlin) • Dr. Michael Fehr (Karl Ernst Osthaus Museum, Hagen) • Heidemarie Schwermer (Das Sterntalerexperiment), partially represented by Jutta Hoffmann • Leonie Baumann (Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst) • Indymedia.de (Hamburg /Berlin) • Siegfried Schmidtke (Kügelgen-Schmidtke-Kinderbetreuung GbR, Köln) • finger (Frankfurt / Berlin)

The project was publicized through various email distributions, in the press, on TV and radio, on infoscreens in subway trains as well as in the context of other exhibitions and presentations in art institions. (www.manifesta4.de)

In July, we were able to increase the amount of prize money, originally totalling 10,000 Euros, when the project evolutionäre zellen was chosen to receive an award of 5000 Euros from the Restpfenningaktion (www.restpfennig.com). We would like to express our thanks to Susanne Bosch and the jury of the Restpfennigaktion for their support.

By the August 31, 2002 deadline, we had received a total of 312 entries to the competition. From these, seven projects were selected by the jury in early October which will be awarded with a prize of either 1000 or 3000 Euros.

The projects designated to receive 3000 Euros from the competition »evolutionÄre zellen« are:
Freedom of Movement, Brandenburgische Flüchtlingsinitiative, (Rathenow)
ADOPTED, Gudrun F. Widlok (Berlin)
Site Geist, Center for Land Use Interpretation, (Los Angeles)
Additional SURVIVAL COUPONS, Skart (Belgrad)

1000 Euros have been awarded to the projects:
Swoon Union (Brooklyn)
subTV, Hybrid Video Tracks (Berlin)
(Speaker's Corner), Thimo Laterne (New York/ Berlin)

To review these projects, see finger issue No.11: http://www.fingerweb.org/finger8_12/finger11/index.html

We would particularly like to thank all the participants in the competition for their exciting to read, often humorous and fascinatingly interesting projects.

We hope that the concept of operating in our society as an »evolutionäre zelle« and making an impact on society as such will continue after the competition has ended. We will also continue to actively follow these developments. Among other ideas, we are planning an archive for »evolutionäre zellen« which would allow us to monitor already documented projects as well as inducting new projects in the future.

Our thanks go to the members of the jury for the earnestness with which they performed their duties. Finally, we would like to thank the members of the Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst, without whose approval this collection of contemporary committment to shaping social perspectives would not have been possible.

about finger

finger is the name for a production association of artists Martin Brandt, Florian Haas, Claudia Hummel and Andreas Wolf. finger is also the title for a continuous publication dealing with places, events and every day life rituals in the form of interviews commentaries and pictures. It mostly focuses on extraordinary phenomena of design or representation which make present social structures visible. The initial idea was to create a platform, which makes it possible for artists and authors to discuss different kinds of approaches engaged in interpretation and production of contemporary culture. We are interested in the interactions and overlappings of sociology, politics, religion, economy, science, and fine arts with forms of everyday life. Citations, discussions, interviews, and observations are ther basis for the work. They don't want to be an example of some theory but an exemplary case of reality. Using the medium newspaper and the method of commentary, our work resembles journalism.

Our personal union takes care of the editorial office, the design, the publication, production and distibution. But the main part of our work is doing research, working out articles, discussions and the confrontation with the participating artists, authors and institutions. Thirteen finger issues have appeared so far. Seven of them were realized in collaboration with galleries and museums in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, USA (NYC) and in cooperation with »forum a«, Seoul, South Korea.

This kind of collaborations with institutions make expositions come into beeing, where photographs, internet pages, and objects from every day life are beeing shown in displays, as well as some issues of the finger magazine. finger is also beeing presented in the form of conferences and lectures.

finger is bilingual (English and German) and the edition ranges between 3,000 and 10,000 copies. finger is offered by cooperating institutions and bookshops - for example, Printed Matter in New York -, it is also available at the editorial office in Frankfurt / Main and through other distributors. It is also supported by subscribers.
