Ježevo - A Story Without a Happy Ending
Ježevo is a detention camp, a prison, located in Croatia (even though in Slovenia we have similar camps or detention place(s), just with another name) for the large number of illegal migrants "successfully caught" crossing borders, mostly Asians trying to reach the promised land of New Europe.

Ježevo is a form of "civilized" detention, beholden to the European community and the First (capitalist) World, as a way of keeping the borders of the united Europe as clean and as secure as possible. It is an acknowledgement of the international community, which insists on the Schengen agreement, in turn demonstrating that different states can fully respect and operate to the agreed-upon terms of the security game. The Schengen agreement that was first signed as an economic act of regulation in Western Europe in the mid-80s, in the 90s became a European Community act of severe regulation focusing on how to stop immigration, how to stop movements of "aliens", how to regulate the visa application process, crossing borders, the seeking of political asylum, etc.

(See: http://www.spjelkavik.priv.no/henning/ifi/schengen.html for an accurate insight into the Schengen agreement.)

Ježevo is only one of the signs of the properly applied and performed cordon sanitaire of European ideology; it is a way of establishing a zone to protect Western Europe (or perhaps it is better to say - a new Europe) from an epidemic of refugees and immigrants (or, as was publicly stated in mid-September 2001 by representatives of the Roman Catholic Church, if it is a process of immigration to Western Europe, then it must be controlled and selective, i.e. cleansed of Muslim immigrants).

Ježevo is not a paradox of the First capitalist civilized World, as the late capitalist system functions as a system of constantly producing forms of detention, segregation, mutilation, imprisonment in order to keep and nurture-at least on the surface-the idea of freedom without borders. Freedom and exchange of values, and travelling without borders is realized only with the brutal system of forced illegality, famine and expropriation in other non-European regions. Most of the illegally caught "non civilized world citizens" come from Asian regions or from some Eastern European region not yet disinfected, purified and consolidated enough to be part of the new European community. The vast number of illegal people seeking work and a better life are the poorest and the most deprived, as for example the Kurds that have been fighting for years to gain independence. Most of these underprivileged nations and people are suppressed by marketing laws and direct expropriation. Mr. Hannibal (the name derived from the word "cannibal") is the best sign and the example of a well-educated citizen of the First capitalist World. Devouring, disintegrating, confiscating bodies and spirit, eating them, forcing them to be frozen in trucks, drowned in thousands of little boats, in their attempt to reach the coasts of some of the promised countries part of the European community -is the way in which the New Europe along with the First capitalist, North American World is functioning. All this shows that capitalism - the way the capitalist system functions - is internally and vitally connected to cannibalism.

This entire system of regulation and detention, segregation and confiscation, forced illegality, sanctioned poverty, spiritual brutality (and etc, ad infinitum) is enforced and received a new powerful blessing after September 11, 2001. The war against terrorism and terrorists by the USA and allies immediately gave without a special epilogue, a large screen of approval to brutal actions of persecutions and state murders.
The war against terrorism is an empty paradigm meaning it can be filled by the First capitalist World with everyone and everybody who at any given moment can be seen as an undesirable element, a threat to freedom and market laws of capitalism. This war against terrorism is a carte blanche, a Blankito law without borders; this is really the first form of the total freedom to destroy anybody, everybody, everything and anything that presents a threat to the First capitalist World. It is an umbrella which gives a free space for killing, detention, and murdering, seen as a system of cleansing the territory of terrorists, of suspicious people, illegal bodies, strange non-white faces. This war against terrorism has sanctioned the already growing system of police searches, detention and it has cut in half legal and civil rights movements. We conform freely and willingly to all these, happy to give our small contribution to the slogan of the day: the war against terrorism. Are you with us or against us? is the question of the day. An answer is not needed anymore and nobody is expecting to hear it. The system of restriction and deprivation is set, the machine already functioning, it was there earlier, but hidden, and today that system of repression is made visible and approved by us.

The problem of Ježevo is actually that there is no way to get rid of it. It is there without any possibility to be resolved. Ježevo is the clearest sign of our inability to act and to change. We can just slightly embellish some things, give them momentary attention, open a set of questions, but we cannot change the basic structure of it, the basic aim of it, nor its final status!
